A remote place, in a beautiful setting on the north coast of Madeira Island, 2 minutes walk from the beach. The surf is an extra.
Madeira Surf Camp is a guesthouse in the heart of the village and historic area of Porto da Cruz, Madeira. We completely renovated the property in 2020 in order to accommodate those who visit us in comfort and safety, in a centenary house.
Here you can have your privacy and, if you want, hang out with us and the other guests.
The rehabilitation of the terrace has made this space the ex-libris of the property. With a sunbathing solarium, a shower to refresh yourself, and a barbecue for outdoor meals. This in an exotic setting in the northeast of Madeira Island, with 360º views over the sea and mountains surrounding the village.
On the lower floor, there is a fully equipped kitchen and living room in a single room where you can have your meals or relax on the sofa. There is also a complete bathroom on this floor, and the kitchen and living room are shared with all guests.
Madeira Surf Camp was founded by local surfers André Rodrigues and Hélder Vieira who wanted to offer to other surfers, the local waves, nature, gastronomy and culture of the island.
ROOM
Two single-beds room. Oriented to the East, you can enjoy the sea view that the room has. Completely renovated in 2020, you'll find the comfort you're looking for your rest. The room has storage for your belongings and bathroom with shower.
AREA
The village of Porto da Cruz is located on the northern coast of Madeira Island, between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches of Porto da Cruz are especially suitable for beginner surfers as they are the only ones with volcanic black sand with surfable waves.
Porto da Cruz still preserves its traditions, with a relaxed lifestyle and a very hospitable local culture. In the area, there are several restaurants where you can taste the regional gastronomy, such as fresh fish, seafood and other traditional Madeiran dishes, as well as wines and spirits.
The village does not have a very busy nightlife like other surfing destinations in Portugal. However, if you are looking for a closer contact with nature and a relaxed lifestyle, then this is your surf camp.
Madeira Surf Camp is surrounded by banana plantations, vineyards, and it is only 15 km from the International Airport and 30 km from the centre of Funchal. The beach and all the necessary services are just a few meters from the Surf Camp.
Being located in a rural area, there are several outdoor activities that you can do, such as canyoning, track running, mountain biking, paragliding, fishing, karting, among others.
SURF
The village is surrounded by volcanic black sandy beaches, ideal for those who want to take surfing lessons and learn to surf in Madeira Island. In Madeira Island there are almost no crowds, in fact not many local surfers. The north coast has the highest consistency and exposure to the North Atlantic swells and the widest range of waves and various levels of surfing.
The island offers a vast array of waves just minutes away, from long and soft waves suitable for beginners to extreme surfing conditions for "big wave surfers". For beginner surfers, the most popular spots in Porto da Cruz are all black sand:
Alagoa - A small bay, just two minutes walk from the surf field and the surf school. Ideal for learning and surfing lessons as it is protected from the big waves.
Maiata - It is about ten minutes away from the surf camp. It is the largest and most beautiful sandy beach in Madeira, it can withstand waves of up to 2 metres.

GETTING AROUND
Once in Madeira, leave the airport on the motorway towards Santana, just follow the signs to Porto da Cruz. Madeira Surf Camp is located right in the middle of the village of Porto da Cruz.
When you reach the exit to Porto da Cruz, take the right (2nd exit) at the roundabout. Go directly to the centre of Porto da Cruz village, on the regional road for about 3 minutes. Arriving at the village, take the 2nd exit where you will find the blue house.
You can also reach Porto da Cruz using public transport, the bus company is called SAM and leaves from Avenida do Mar in Funchal or the airport terminal. The bus numbers are 53, 78 and 208.
The best option to reach the property is the transfer. Ask us to book one with our local partners. It is cheaper than the taxis you find at the airport. If you rent a car, any navigation application will easily find the address.

You have access to all common areas of the property and your room.

We are always available to help or answer questions. We do our best to reply to all requests. We also have an app for guests with all the important information about the property and other useful information for your stay.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS
- Check-in hour must be scheduled in advance. If it is not scheduled within a maximum of 48 hours before, guests will be subject to the availability of our team.
- Bookings made on the day of check-in are subject to confirmation of check-in time. In this case, you should contact us before finalising your booking.
- According to Portuguese law, all guests are required to present a valid ID. (passport or identity card).

We want you to feel at home. We do not ask for more than respect for neighbours and care for the property, in addition to not smoking inside the house or the room.

We let the host know so this likely has been corrected. The hosts were great and allowed us to check in very early as our flight landed in the morning. The space was perfect, rooftop was beautiful and great to shower up there in the hot weather. Would 100% recommend to anyone traveling even if you don’t plan on surfing. The other guests were friendly and we felt as if we still had privacy or if we wanted to socialize could also do that. Perfect location!

Wir waren hier für 4 Nächte und haben den Aufenthalt sehr genossen. Die Zimmer sind sauber und zweckmäßig. Die gemeinsame Küche ist gut ausgestattet. Die Dachterasse ist traumhaft. Wir hatten sie zumeist auch ganz für uns alleine.
Die Lage ist top, der Ort ist sehr klein und alles ist fußläufig zu erreichen.

Great location if you want to hike and go surfing. The host is very kind and helps if you want to do an activity or have any questions. The rooftop area and common kitchen were perfect to chill or work on my thesis as well. I can recommend booking a surf class as well, it was a great experience and amazing instructor.

Wat een fijne kamer hadden wij. Het heeft een mooie buitenruimte (op het dak) waar vanaf men prachtig zicht heeft over het dorpje en de zee. De accommodatie was zeer netjes, schoon en comfortabel. De (gezamenlijke) keuken was voorzien van alles wat we nodig hadden en schoon. Het bed was goed. De communicatie verliep soepel en snel, zowel voorafgaand als tijdens ons verblijf. Bij wensen reageerde de host sensitief. Het enige aandachtspunt is dat het wat gehorig is. Wij zouden deze accommodatie aanraden. Veel dank voor het fijne verblijf!

Regarding the cockroaches issue, we do regular disinfections during the summer in our properties however we're talking about flying insects and sometimes it's hard to have a tight control to avoid them outside/inside the house.

Angenehme Unterkunft, sauber und tolle, ruhige Lage.
Eines sollte man allerdings beachten:
Die Zimmer sind sehr hellhörig, das heißt, es ist alles zu hören: wenn die anderen Gäste miteinander im Zimmer sprechen, wenn jemand kommt und geht (nachts nicht so angenehm, weil es sich anfühlt, als ob jemand im Zimmer stehen würde)
Ansonsten top, würde wieder dort bleiben!

Really felt like home. Location is very good as you can hear the ocean. Stunning views from the rooftop terrace. Everything is like at the pictures. Rooms little bit small but quite ok.

Ich gebe selten voll 10 Punkte, aber hier ist es wirklich angebracht, das Haus gut gelegen, alles innerhalb des Orts ist in ein paar Minuten zu Fuß zu erreichen, ein großer Parkplatz ist um die Ecke.
Das Zimmer ist wirklich schön, und ich finde auch nicht zu klein (was ab und an zu lesen ist). Man kann problemlos einen Koffer auf dem Boden ausmachen, nur liegenlassen halt nicht...
Ich hatte spontan die Möglichkeit einen Surfkurs zu buchen, dervon einem motivierten Team durchgeführt wird. Die Fenster haben fliegengitter, mankan also gut Lüften, die Vorhänge dichten gut ab. Es steht eine gut ausgestattete Küche zur Verfügung.
Alles ist etwas kleiner als es auf den Bildern aussieht, aber trotzdem sehr schön.
In den Leselampen müssen dimmbare LEDs verbaut werden... Nein im ernst, es gibt nicht wirklich was zu bemängeln, vielleicht dass es durch das Klima relativ feucht ist und kledung schlecht trocken wird, aber das hat man wohl überall wo es keine Klimaanlage gibt.

The Madeira Surf Camp guesthouse is a great place to stay in the village of Porto da Cruz - the room and bathroom are spacious and kitchen is (always) clean and well-stocked with utensils and spices/herbs so you don't have to buy everything yourself. The guesthouse is a great place to meet people (even though there are only 4 rooms, so max of 8 guests staying at a time) and is always booked throughout my 4-day stay. I had a great time surfing and renting from the surf camp and interacted mostly with Helder (who also coached us one one of the days).
The village itself is very small and there's not much to do. If you have a car, there are public (safe) parking for your rental available for free within walking distance. There's also a small (family-owned) cafe and several restaurants nearby. The views from the balcony/terrace area is fantastic for both sunrise and sunset - highly recommended to enjoy your breakfast or dinner there :)

Our stay was great. The rooms are clean and very nice, fully equiped kitchen. We rented some surfboards and that went well too. But we were surprised that we didnt have breakfast as the listing is called “Bed and breakfast” 😅

Very good value for the price in perfect quaint town. Very laid back spot - away from mob of tourists but there were few very nice restaruants, snack bars, bakery and supermaket in the area. In the Surf Camp building there was a lovely terrace with a stunning view of the surroundings. There were sunbeds and a place to eat meals. Everything just as in the photos. Room and all shared space were very clean and well maintained and everything was at hand in the kitchen. Helder and Andre - the hosts were very helpful and communicative. The checkin and checkout were very smooth. We used the recommended airport transfer and it was perfectly on time and very comfortable.
The only downside (if you like late lazy mornings) is that the chuch tower bells start ringing every day at 7 AM :) Other than that - it was perfect in every way for last few days on Madeira to blow of some steam and regenerate after all the levada walks. But for very active people - there are some nice hikes to do in the area, and the beaches are rocky but mostly empty and very picturesque.
The only downside (if you like late lazy mornings) is that the chuch tower bells start ringing every day at 7 AM :) Other than that - it was perfect in every way for last few days on Madeira to blow of some steam and regenerate after all the levada walks. Room and all shared space were very clean and well maintained and everything was at hand in the kitchen. Helder and Andre - the hosts were very helpful and communicative. Overall nice stay!
Sadly no one was there to welcome us and "explain" the house when we arrived...
Unfortunately the bathroom door couldn't be closed properly which was a little bit uncomfortable for both persons. Additionally, the shower door was broken (also couldn't be closed/opened as intended) and also the toilet flush didn't function well (kept on running if not pressed again)

L'établissement d'Helder est localisé au cœur du villa ge de Porto da Cruz. c'est un bel établissement bleu bébé d'une propreté impeccable tant en ce qui concerne la chambre que les parties communes (cuisine, salle à manger et salon).
Un toit terrasse avec une superbe vue sur mer invite à la détente avec ses chaises longues mises à disposition des hôtes.
Helder est un hôte attentionné qui malgrés le fait que nous ne l'ayons pas croisé à toujours gardé le contact avec nous par sms et à répondu avec promptitude à toutes nos demandes.
Je recommande vivement cet établissement et c'est avec plaisir que nous y séjournerons de nouveau lors de notre prochain voyage à Madère.

The rooftop, the decoration, the comfort, the equipment, the view, the location... The surfcamp is really a nice place to stay. And I highly recommend taking surf lessons with Helder, he's the best teacher I ever met and you'll make progress in no time.

You’ll get a very clean and cozy room in the middle of Porto da Cruz, right in the vicinity of the beach. Very easy to book surf lessons here, but if you’re not interested you’re also welcome to stay. The roof terrace is a nice plus with a good view. The church bells wake you up at 7am though, and the people sleeping next to you in the hall can be noisy, that’s the only thing! The kitchen area is also very nice and surprisingly clean!
